  • Visitor’s Guide to Northern Sierra Wine Country

From romantic retreats to outdoor adventures, the Northern Sierra is the perfect wine country getaway. There’s an abundance of fine restaurants and quaint lodging to make your entire stay relaxing and enjoyable. Whether you choose to taste wines in the historic downtown districts of Grass Valley and Nevada city or roam the bucolic country roads of rural Nevada County, fine wine awaits your very turn. Designated drivers are available through local chartered limo service and tours. For lovers of the arts, there are live theatre and art galleries to enjoy. And for those with a passion for the great outdoors---fine golf courses, horseback riding, parks, hiking and biking trails and skiing are all within, or a short drive from Northern Sierra Wine country. Rent a kayak or go rafting down the Yuba or American rivers. There is something for everyone, in every season.

Foothills Celebration is held the first Saturday in March. Spend a Saturday afternoon strolling Historic Downtown Grass Valley, enjoying its boutique shops while sampling fine wines, gourmet food and live music. Over 50 wineries and restaurants will be participating in the event and are sure to please everyone’s palate.

Northern Sierra Wine Trail is held Memorial Weekend. The wineries of the Northern Sierra throw open their doors in a grand tour and celebrate Spring. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet the winemakers in Grass Valley, Penn Valley, Lake of the Pines, Nevada City, Chicago Park and the San Juan Ridge area. Each venue offers a special experience including fine wine and food pairings, live music, tours of working wineries, caves and vineyards, barrel samples and new releases.

A Grape Affair, held in September celebrates the Fall harvest with all the wineries. This event features wine tasting, barrel sampling, educational displays, art and music. Bring a picnic or enjoy food offered at an extra low cost.
