South Yuba River Park Assn. Joins the Chamber
SYRPA recently joined the PVACoC as part of its desire to be more involved with the community. The organization’s mission is to support the South Yuba River State Park for interpretation and fund raising. Volunteers and trained docents publicize the Park, lead tours, staff the Visitor’s Center, help maintain the grounds, patrol the trails, lead wildflower walks, lead bird walks, augment State funds available to the Park, and organize spring and fall public events. New volunteers and docents are sought to support the growing number of activities at the Park.
The Association contributed to the upgrade and refurbishment of the Barn, now open to the public. Built at about the same time as the covered Bridge, the Barn was the center of the Bridgeport transportation hub during the California gold rush and Nevada silver mining eras. Known in the past primarily for the 1862 covered bridge over the South Yuba River and the attractive swimming beaches, the Barn displays a number of period wagons, a hay press, and a Jackson Fork to lift hay into the loft. Interpretive panels document the progress of transportation in the area through the Native American, exploration, gold rush, silver mining, early auto, and modern transportation periods.
The Association partners with the Chamber to produce the Living History and Art Show Day in the spring and the Ghosts of Bridgeport Day in the fall. Chamber support to the Park includes planning, publicity, set-up, and sale of refreshments.
